In honor of International Women’s Day, it is more important than ever to celebrate the extraordinary impact of women on communities throughout the world. According to a new report released by UN Women on February 14, “Turning
Promises Into Action: Gender Equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” there is far more we must do to ensure that women are reaching the global benchmarks set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This is why I invite you to
cosponsor my bill, H.R. 4932, the Women and Climate Change Act of 2018, which would provide coordinated and comprehensive strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on women and girls around the world.
The
report sheds light on the vast gender inequalities spanning across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and how women are facing greater economic, agricultural, and health-related hardships arising from climate change. 4.4 million more women than men live
on less than $1.90 USD a day, and in two thirds of countries, women are more likely than men to report food insecurity. In fact, between 2010 and 2015, the loss of 3.3 million hectares of forest greatly affected poor rural women, who depend on natural resources
to provide for the economic wellbeing and survival of their families and communities. Furthermore, while women and girls are responsible for water collection in 80% of the world’s households, they often lack access to water on their immediate premises, a problem
exacerbated by climate change and drought. Women are 14 times as likely as men to die during a disaster, and women are disproportionately affected by sexual violence in times of conflict and displacement that result from climate change.
While women are clearly bearing the brunt of climate change’s effects, they are often underrepresented in the development of climate change adaptation policy. That is why it is important to cosponsor my bill,
H.R.4932,
the Women and Climate Change Act of 2018, to help empower women in shaping international climate change policies and practices that help communities embark on a path towards clean and sustainable development. If you would like to join
