I invite you to show your support for Americans with disabilities by co-sponsoring the Disabled Access Credit Expansion Act—a bill that doubles the
Disabled Access Credit (DAC) and loosens eligibility requirements to better help small businesses comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Right now, small businesses can receive a tax credit worth 50% of eligible expenses incurred to meet accessibility requirements under the ADA. By creating a positive incentive for compliance, the credit both increases access and reduces liability—benefiting
both people with disabilities and the businesses they patronize.
For purposes of the credit, current law defines “small businesses” as those with gross receipts of $1 million or less, or with 30 or fewer full-time employees; expenses in excess of $250, but less than $10,250, are generally eligible.
The Disabled Access Credit Expansion Act would increase the ceiling on eligible expenses to $20,500, doubling the maximum possible credit from $5,000 to $10,125. It would also index that ceiling to inflation, ensuring that the real value of the credit does
not shrink over time. Finally, the bill would make the credit more widely available, expanding the definition of “small business” to include companies with receipts of $2.5 million or less.
As Americans, we do not believe in discrimination or exclusion. It is more important than ever that we renew our commitment to basic fairness and equal access. This bill would do exactly that—in a way that benefits not just people with disabilities, but
small businesses, as well. I urge you to consider signing on as a co-sponsor.
