I invite you to cosponsor H.Res. 715, Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike for Jobs, Justice, and Human Dignity.
During this month, 50 years ago in Memphis, Tennessee, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, two sanitation workers, were crushed to death while they were sheltering from a driving rainstorm inside the compacting compartment of their sanitation truck when it malfunctioned.
Following the accident, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to Memphis to raise public awareness about the bleak economic conditions under which so many Americans labor, particularly the sanitation workers in Memphis.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King, and it is fitting and appropriate that we remember and honor the cause for which Dr. King lived and died. This resolution honors the memory of Echol Cole, Robert Walker and
their co-workers who struggled for economic justice and human dignity. The resolution also remembers the extraordinary moral leadership of Dr. King, and calls upon and encourages all Americans to remember those who struggle for justice and dedicate themselves
to realizing Dr. King’s dream.
To sign on as a co-sponsor of this resolution, please contact Lillie Coney of my staff at Lillie.Coney@mail.house.gov or by telephone at (202) 225-3816.
Very truly yours,
Sheila Jackson Lee
