**TRI-CAUCUS STAFF BRIEFING**
Featuring new Pew
Report
on equity and diversity in the STEM workplace

Friday February 9th, 2018
2168 Rayburn HOB (Gold Room)
2:00-3:00 p.m.

RSVP here.

Dear Colleague:

We write to invite you to a staff briefing that the Congressional Tri-Caucus is hosting to highlight the challenges that employees of color in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields face on
Friday, February 9th from 2 – 3 pm in 2168 RHOB.

The Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan “fact tank” that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world, recently published a

report
on equity and diversity in the STEM workplace – an area where employees of color are severely underrepresented. It examines:

·         Experiences of blacks, Hispanics and Asians in STEM jobs

·         Diversity in the STEM workforce

·         Experiences of women in STEM jobs, including gender discrimination and sexual harassment

·         Americans’ views of STEM jobs and STEM education

We have invited the researchers who worked on this report to present their findings to Tri-Caucus staff so that Congress has a better understanding of the challenges that individuals in STEM fields face.

Below is an example of some findings which they will cover:

·        Blacks who work in STEM fields are more likely than STEM workers from other racial or ethnic backgrounds to say they have faced discrimination on the job.

·        Overall, 62% of blacks, followed by 44% of Asians, 42% of Hispanics and just 13% of whites in STEM jobs say they have experienced discrimination at work due to their race or ethnicity.
