Sending Office: Honorable Elizabeth H. Esty
December 14 marks the fifth anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which took the lives of 20 innocent children and six brave educators.
Many of you have asked what you can do to support the Newtown community and those across the country who are impacted by gun violence. I encourage you to join me in honoring all victims of gun violence by participating in one or more of these opportunities:
Acts of Kindness in Your District: The week of December 10, Members are encouraged to organize and participate in various “Acts of Kindness” in their congressional districts. For example, this week in my district, I will spend a few
hours reading to preschoolers.
Acts of Kindness in Washington, D.C.: On Wednesday, December 13 from 2:00pm-3:30pm in Cannon 340, there will be an opportunity to participate in an Acts of Kindness event right here in D.C. Members and staff will write messages of
gratitude and support to active service members and veterans across the country. I encourage you and your staff to join me and my staff in participating in the Acts of Kindness to honor those lost to gun violence.
Special Order Hour: Next week, I will be organizing a Special Order Hour for Members to speak on the floor to honor and remember victims of gun violence in Newtown and across the country. Details to follow.
National Vigil to End Gun Violence: On Wednesday, December 6 from 7pm – 9:00pm, survivors and family members of those affected by gun violence from across the country and gun violence prevention supporters will attend the 4th
annual National Vigil to End Gun Violence at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill (301 A Street, SE). You and your staff are encouraged to attend. Please
Press Conferences: On Wednesday, December 6 at 1:00 pm and on
Thursday, December 7 at 10:00 am, the Newtown Action Alliance will hold press conferences with House and Senate Members. If you are interested in participating, please contact my Communications Director Phil LaRue at Phil.LaRue@mail.house.gov.
Wear Green: Members and staff are encouraged to wear green on
Thursday, December 14 to show support for gun violence prevention. Green ribbons have been distributed to each Congressional office. Additional ribbons are available in my office, 221 Cannon. The Sandy Hook school’s colors are green and white.
Social Media: There are several opportunities to show your support through social media. Opportunities include:
- Participating in a thunderclap on Twitter organized by the Newtown Foundation at 9am on
Wednesday, December 6. To participate,
you must sign up ahead of time.
- Participating in a Tweet storm during the afternoon of Thursday, December 14, led by @RepEsty using #HonorWithAction, #EndGunViolence, and #OutShoutTheGunLobby. Graphics and sample tweets will be circulated shortly.
- Posting a photo to Facebook of you and/or staff wearing green in remembrance of the 26 children and educators killed at Sandy Hook School. Use #HonorWithAction, #EndGunViolence, and #OutShoutTheGunLobby.
