Become an Original Cosponsor of a Bill to Establish
a Congressional Commission to Combat Sexual Harassment
Please join me in becoming an original cosponsor of a bill I will be introducing to establish a national commission to examine and combat sexual harassment in the workplace.
Modeled on legislation Congress has already enacted to combat other national problems, my bill will create a national commission to find ways to combat sexual harassment in major industries and workplaces. It would assure the American people that congressional
concern about sexual harassment extends to their workplaces and beyond high-profile cases, such as Harvey Weinstein or the Congress itself. The committee would report to Congress on recommended changes in laws or regulations and analyze best practices for
preventing, training, investigating, responding to, and punishing sexual harassment in the private and public sectors.
Our constituents expect Congress, which represents every sector, to take on the national problem of sexual harassment, which we now know has infected every major sector of the American workplace. Gender discrimination and the hierarchy of power in the workplace
mean that, across all sectors, men still hold positions that enable them to take advantage of female subordinates if they choose.
A national commission would help reach and reduce sexual harassment where the average woman works. The commission would not have to wait for women to take the risk of coming forward. It would be charged with identifying and taking affirmative steps to
investigate sectors that receive little attention. Congress has created similar national commissions in other areas, such as gambling and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism. My bill will model the sexual harassment commission
on those prior commissions.
