Sending Office: Honorable Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr.
Request for Cosponsor(s)
Please join me in cosponsoring H.R. 3664, the FBI Director Integrity Act, legislation that would create a “for-cause standard” for the firing of the FBI Director.
President Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey in May challenged the integrity of the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and raised questions about the FBI’s independence. The President’s decision to remove former
Director Comey was seen by many as an impulsive act meant to derail the investigation.
A free and independent federal law enforcement agency is a cornerstone of our democracy and should not be subject to political pressure or involvement. In order to ensure that the sitting FBI director is insulated from political influence, the position must
be protected from impulsive dismissals. Join me in protecting the independence of our law enforcement agencies by becoming a cosponsor of H.R. 3664, the FBI Director Integrity Act.
The FBI Director Integrity Act, amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, to require a for-cause standard before the FBI director can be dismissed. The bill states that the President may only remove the Director of the FBI if he/she
violates a Department of Justice (DOJ) policy, is convicted of a felony or misdemeanor, misappropriates FBI funds, or if other good cause is found. This legislation would ensure the integrity of future ongoing investigations and protect all FBI Directors from
the possibility of being fired at whim.
If you have any questions or would like to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation, please contact Robin Chand in my office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
