Sending Office: Honorable Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr.
Please join me, the National Election Defense Coalition, Common Cause, Progressive Democrats of America and Verified Voting and others, in supporting in H.R. 3132, the Restoring Confidence in America’s Elections Act, which seeks to amend the Help America
Vote Act of 2002 to promote accuracy, integrity and security in the administration of elections – particularly through the use of durable paper ballots.
After the 2016 election, allegations of Russian involvement arose. It quickly became clear that our voting systems were endangered and vulnerable. After initial pushback on investigating voting machines, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later acquired
evidence that the election apparatuses of at least 21 states may have been compromised. According to
NPR, the DHS placed calls to the states and territories that were attacked. These states, however, may decide whether to share that information with the public.
After an incredibly close election, and the jarring presidency that has followed, the American people deserve answers regarding allegations of Russian interference. Our voting systems were, and may still be, susceptible to attack. H.R. 3132 is urgent,
and we need to ensure the security of our nation’s election infrastructure.
In addition to widely implementing paper ballots, H.R. 3132 would mandate the publication of poll tapes and a mandatory response from the Attorney General, should there be evidence of voter intimidation or suppression. Furthermore, this bill would implement
the protocols necessary, should a voting system fail. By implementing targeted and practical measures, H.R. 3132 seeks to close dangerous loopholes in an effort to restore and reenergize the confidence of the American voters.
