Help American Manufacturers: Support Torres Amendment to Increase Funding for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program
Later today the House will vote on the Torres amendment (#87) to H.R. 3354 – the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2018. We write to ask for your support on our amendment to increase funding
for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program, which is cut in the underlying legislation by $30 million, by $5 million. Strengthening U.S. manufacturing is essential to ensure that American innovation remains competitive around the world. Through
federal, state, and local collaborations, MEP has worked to provide manufacturers around the nation with comprehensive services that have helped improved their businesses. This increase is offset by an equal reduction in Department of Justice Salaries and
Investing in MEP makes economic sense; over 12.5% of the GDP comes from manufacturing. For every $1,500 spent, we create or retain one manufacturing job in America. Last year MEP received $130 million in funding, this led to:
- 142,381 jobs created or retained (86,602 new jobs)
- Increase in $15.4 billion in GDP
- $9.3 billion in new and retained sales
An investment in American manufacturers means countering the offshoring of manufacturing jobs. There are over 12 million Americans working in manufacturing today. In FY 2014 over 30,056 manufacturers were helped by MEP.
Check how MEP has benefited manufacturing businesses in your state here.
