Sending Office: Honorable Barbara Lee
Urge Secretary Tillerson to Honor U.S. Commitments in Africa
We invite you to join us in sending a letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, urging the State Department and the Administration to support continued investment and diplomacy in Africa.
In recent months, President Trump and Secretary Tillerson have signaled a dramatic and disturbing shift in policy towards Africa after decades of bipartisan engagement with the continent. By decimating aid programs, diplomatic posts, democracy building initiatives,
and contributions to the United Nations (UN) system, this Administration risks dire consequences for our leadership abroad and ultimately U.S. national security.
President Trump’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Budget proposed cutting the overall budget for aid to Africa by nearly $3 billion. Unfortunately, Africa faces an increasingly complicated set of humanitarian and security challenges that threaten U.S. interests and
require sustained and serious engagement by the U.S. and the world community.
Now is not the time to retreat from our past promises and goals. Please join me in urging the State Department to reaffirm that sustainable development; economic growth, human rights, and humanitarian assistance in Africa that are tantamount to U.S. national
security interests and remain critical investments in the prosperity and security throughout the continent.
