The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, D.C. invites you to celebrate the Polish National Heritage Month and to visit the exhibition “Anders’ Army – the Trail of Hope” followed by a reception in the Rayburn Foyer.
The exhibition “Anders’ Army – the Trail of Hope” presents events following the German-Soviet Nonaggression Treaty and Soviet aggression on Poland of 17 September 1939 until the launch of Operation Barbarossa resulting in the Sikorski–Majski Agreement of
30 July 1941.
Born in 1892 occupied Poland, Anders served in the Russian army during World War I. Once Poland regained independence in 1918, Anders joined the forces of the reconstituted Polish state and fought the Red Army in the Russo-Polish War of 1918-1920, for which
he was awarded the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari – Poland’s highest military decoration. After the outbreak of World War II, Anders commanded Polish brigade in the fight against the German forces and was captured by the Soviets in late September 1939.
After three years of imprisonment, Anders was released and tasked with the formation of the Polish Army in accordance with the Sikorski-Majski Agreement.
The exhibit will take place from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and the reception from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, October 2, 2017 – both in the Rayburn Foyer.
