Request for Cosponsor(s)

CLOSING TODAY

Current Cosponsors: Gonzalez, O’Halleran, Raskin,Vargas

Dear Colleague,

I invite you to cosponsor the Student and Families Tax Reduction Act. This legislation makes permanent the above-the-line tax deduction for higher education tuition and fees, which expired at the end of 2016.

Congress must act to restore this important deduction for tax year 2017 and beyond. It is important to provide families with certainty and stability when it comes to budgeting for higher education expenses. The Student and Families Tax Reduction Act achieves
this by making permanent the above-the-line deduction for higher education tuition and fees.

In 2014 alone, over 1.7 million taxpayers benefited from the deduction. Approximately 900,000 of those taxpayers had incomes of less than $50,000. The deduction for tuition and fees works by allowing filers with incomes under $65,000 ($130,000 for joint
filers) to claim a deduction of up to $4,000 for qualified higher education expenses. It is phased out for taxpayers with incomes between $65,000 and $80,000 ($160,000 for joint filers), who can claim a deduction up to $2,000.

Please join me in supporting the deduction for tuition and related expenses by cosponsoring the Student and Families Tax Reduction Act. If you have any questions or would like to cosponsor the bill, please contact
Jarrett.Freedman@mail.house.gov.

Sincerely,

Carol Shea-Porter

Member of Congress
