Sending Office: Honorable Grace F. Napolitano
Tuesday, October 3rd 2:00-3:00 PM
Congressional Meeting Room South in Capitol Visitor’s Center
By now you should have received an invitation to a Congressional Staff Briefing by Mental Health America focused on the need to address mental illness before it compounds. The briefing will be held on Tuesday, October 3rd from 2:00-3:00 pm in
the Capitol Visitor Center’s Congressional Meeting Room South. Founded in 1909 Mental Health America is a leading non-profit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), half of all mental illnesses begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24. Yet, there are long delays from the onset of symptoms to intervention. There are also many children and adults who are unable to
access effective services and support. It is time to get as serious about early identification and intervention for mental health conditions as we are about other health conditions.
At the briefing you will learn from those who have been affected by a mental illness in their family and view a mini-documentary report entitled
Before Stage Four: Confronting Early Psychosis. A short question and answer session with the documentary director David Solomon and Tim’s father and President of Mental Health America Paul Gionfriddo will follow after the screening. Light refreshments
will be served.
