Sending Office: Honorable Peter A. DeFazio
Request for Cosponsor(s)
Please join me in supporting legislation to ensure reasonable pricing for prescription drugs and other healthcare products funded by American taxpayer dollars. Senator Bernie Sanders is the Senate sponsor.
Today, as many as one-third of studies undertaken with pharmaceutical and other big health care companies to bring drugs and medical devices to market are not funded by the company; they are funded by American taxpayer dollars. Even though taxpayers dollars
paid for the research, there is no guarantee the final product is not priced so high that most Americans who need it can afford it. We have seen this time and time again – companies use taxpayer dollars to cover the costs of clinical trials, only then to have
a safe and effective product at an astronomical price. My bill would ensure when American taxpayers’ dollars pay to bring a medicine or device to market, the same American taxpayers can afford the drug or device.
This legislation comes at a critical time. Last year, U.S. Army researchers created the vaccine prototype for the deadly Zika virus, and passed it on to the French conglomerate Sanofi, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. The company will
receive $173 million from the U.S. government to support the additional research needed to bring the drug to market, and it will get the exclusive patent license and global monopoly sales rights for years to come. Sanofi, a company with a history of charging
the U.S. more for its products, cannot be trusted to charge the U.S. fairly, and has not agreed to price the Zika vaccine at a reasonable amount.
By reinserting the reasonable pricing clause into research agreements, my bill would ensure a Zika vaccine developed with U.S. dollars is not put on the shelves here at a much higher price than in other nations.
This common sense legislation would:
- Require fair pricing for any drug, biologic, and other health care products developed with federal research dollars; and
- Ensure any federal entity that explores partnerships with entities to conduct medical research that is underwritten by federal dollars has the authority to include in a contract reasonable pricing demands as a condition moving forward.
I hope you will join me in doing everything we can to provide Americans with access to the safe and effective drugs and medical devices they need, when they need them.
