Dear Colleague:

Please join me as a cosponsor of the Service, Training, Education, and Preparation (STEP) for Veterans Act
(H.R. 996). As our service members transition out of the military, they are looking for good-paying jobs. Across the county, small businesses, startup companies, and local employers are seeking a talented workforce to meet the demands of today’s economy.
The STEP for Veterans Act would provide veterans with the training they need to fill positions that businesses are having trouble finding qualified applicants for.

Specifically, the STEP for Veterans Act would direct the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, to establish a grant program for community colleges. These grants would be used by the community colleges to:

  • Conduct analyses of their local economies to assess the employment openings and the skills and training possessed by veterans.
  • Support or create certificate and degree programs to provide veterans with the skills needed to fill employment openings.
  • Establish an advisory board comprised of representatives from the local business community and Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans find jobs.

The grant program would be authorized at $250 million for Fiscal Year 2018 to remain until expended. Individual grants to community colleges would not exceed $2 million.

I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important bill. For additional information or to be a cosponsor, please contact Karlee Tebbutt in my office at
