Sending Office: Honorable Ted S. Yoho
Become an Original Cosponsor of
The Equip Ag Act 2017
Deadline: COB May 25th
Supported by: The National Young Farmers Coalition
I invite you to join me and Representative O’Halleran (D-AZ) in authorizing the establishment of a joint farm equipment sharing pilot program between the Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Currently, the DOD has a surplus of equipment that has been declared excess and turned into the DOD’s Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for Reutilization, Transfer, and Donation. The pilot program would allow the DOD to lend farm equipment to eligible new
and beginning farmers, including:
- Soil Preparation Equipment
- Harvesting Equipment
- Dairy, Poultry, and Livestock Equipment
- Pest, Disease, and Frost Control Equipment
- Gardening Implements and Tools
The average age of America’s farmer has increased from 50.5 years in 1982 to 58.3 years and the industry has struggled to recruit new and beginning farmers due largely in part to the costs associated with entering agri-business. Access to land, government
regulations, instability in global commodities market, labor expenses and access to capital for operating equipment are but a few obstacles new and beginning farmers face.
The Equip Ag Act of 2017 will alleviate some of the financial burdens by providing these new and beginning farmers with valuable equipment that would otherwise sit unused in a government storage facility. For more information or to cosponsor, contact Brittany
Posobiec at Brittany.Posobiec@mail.house.gov (Rep. Yoho) or Paul Babbitt at
Paul.Babbitt@mail.house.gov (Rep. O’Halleran).
