Co-Sponsor H.R. 154
Honoring our WWII Merchant Mariners Act of 2017

Dear Colleague:

I would like to invite you to become a co-sponsor of H.R. 154, “Honoring our WWII Merchant Mariners Act of 2017.”  In every war fought by the United States, civilian ships have supported military operations by transporting supplies and personnel. The civilians
that have served on these vessels have worked in varying capacities either for private shipping companies under contract with the federal government or for the government itself. These civilians are collectively referred to as Merchant Mariners.

Merchant Mariners who served this nation during World War II have never received full veteran benefits.  They were not eligible for tuition subsidies, home loan guarantees or other provisions of the G.I. Bill that helped millions of veterans go to college,
purchase homes and transition seamlessly into civilian life until the 1980s, after many had already transitioned back into civilian life.

This bill would provide a one-time payment of $25,000 to surviving World War II Mariners. Please support the brave men who risked their lives and help us recognize the great contributions of all veterans by honoring the WWII Merchant Mariners. To become
a co-sponsor, please contact Keenan Hale in the office of Congressman Al Green at 5-7508 or
