Dear Colleague,

Later this month, our country will celebrate Memorial Day in honor of the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  In the spirit of honoring our veterans and service members, please    cosponsor legislation to recognize each Friday before
Memorial Day as National Poppy Day, a day that encourages all Americans to wear a red poppy as a symbol to honor those heroes, current and past, who served our nation in uniform and to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. National Poppy Day
is supported by the American Legion.

Did you know??

  • After World War I, the poppy flower flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war.
  • The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed by those who fought and those who continue to fight for our country following the publication of the poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front
line in World War I, to honor soldiers killed in battle.
  • The poem movingly begins, “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row,” referring to the poppies that sprang up in the churned-up earth of newly dug soldiers’ graves over parts of Belgium and France following World War I.
  • The poppy became the official flower of The American Legion on Sept. 27, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • This year, the United States commemorates the 100th anniversary of its entrance into World War I and the American Legion approaches its 100th anniversary.
  • The poppy is worn in England and Canada on Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day, to commemorate members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

I urge you to join me in promoting this visible recognition of those who have worn our Nation’s uniform by calling for the Friday prior to Memorial Day to be designated as “National Poppy Day.”  If you have any questions, please contact Mica Pilz Harbin
of my office at Mica.Harbin@mail.house.gov, or call 67554.

Sincerely,

André Carson
