Request for Cosponsor(s)

Dear Colleague:

I urge you to cosponsor H.R. 2729, the Oppose Oversharing by Presidents Act (OOPs Act). This legislation directs the National Security Council, in consultation with the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General to create a damage
control process to ensure Americans’ lives are not put at risk in the event a President releases classified information.

With this most recent reporting of our President releasing details of nuclear submarines — some of the most closely guarded information our military has — it is critical that the proper protocols and mitigation procedures are put in place by the Executive
Branch to assess the damage, and ensure that these disclosures do not put Americans and our trusted allies at greater risk.

Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that the President spoke about classified information that may have come from an ally in the Oval Office with the Russian Foreign Minister and Ambassador. Congress needs to ensure that procedures put in place by past
Intelligence Authorizations for the proper disclosure of classified information by government officials are applicable to the President, and that any improper disclosures are mitigated and reported to Congress.
