Cosponsor the COAST Anti-Drilling Act and Oppose Offshore Drilling in the Atlantic Ocean
Deadline: Friday, April 28 COB
I invite you to cosponsor the Clean Ocean and Safe Tourism (COAST) Anti-Drilling Act, which would permanently ban offshore oil and gas development in the Mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Atlantic, and Straits of Florida planning areas.
During the Obama Administration, progress was made towards preventing oil and gas development off our shores. The Department of the Interior removed the Atlantic from its 2017-2022 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program, and the President permanently removed certain sections of the Atlantic from oil and gas development.
However, these hard fought victories are now in jeopardy. According to recent media reports, President Trump is planning on signing an executive order on Friday, April 28 that could expand offshore drilling. This flies in the face of coastal communities along the Atlantic seaboard, of which many have made their opposition to oil and gas development clear.
The economic and environmental impacts of oil and gas development could be devastating and are well documented. Congress should act to permanently ban drilling in the Atlantic Ocean. Should you have any questions regarding the bill, or you would like to cosponsor, please contact Mike Rogers (firstname.lastname@example.org or 5-4671) in my office.
