Honor Nancy Reagan’s Legacy
Cosponsor H.R. 553 to Rename Gravelly Point Park to Nancy Reagan Memorial Park
Supported by: Americans for Tax Reform
On March 6, 2016, our great country lost an icon with the passing of former First Lady Nancy Reagan. During her tenure as First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Reagan served with grace, elegance, and tenacity, and this is all evidenced by the “Just Say No”
campaign that she spearheaded to help children across the country resist recreational drug use.
During the Reagan Administration, Mrs. Reagan was a trusted adviser, confidant, and most importantly, devoted spouse to our 40th President, Ronald Reagan. Since her passing, I believe that it is critically important to preserve Mrs. Reagan’s legacy so that
future generations can appreciate the contributions that she made to our country.
That is why I introduced H.R. 553 to rename Gravelly Point Park along the George Washington Parkway after Nancy Reagan. As you know, Gravelly Point Park is a popular destination in Arlington County, Virginia that is utilized for a number of outdoor activities
like biking, running, picnicking, and watching planes depart and land at Ronald Reagan National Airport.
According to the National Park Service, Gravelly Point Park received its name from the large amount of gravel that was deposited there during a dredging project that occurred along the Potomac River from 1916 to 1952. With its name coming from sediment deposits,
there is no clear historic significance associated with it.
Since Ronald and Nancy Reagan are forever linked in their work, legacy, and final resting place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California, I think there could be no better location to rename after Mrs. Reagan than this beautiful park adjacent
to the airport named in honor of her beloved husband and our 40th President.
