Cosponsor the Safeguarding Sanctuary Cities Act
Dear Colleague:
Please join us in becoming a cosponsor of the Safeguarding Sanctuary Cities Act of 2017. The bill would ensure that any State or local authority cannot lose Federal financial assistance if it limits or restricts compliance with an immigration detainer
request.
It is worth noting that any attempt to strip federal funding is unconstitutional under the Supreme Court decision in NFIB v. Sebelius, which forbids coercive funding conditions. But President-elect Trump has also pledged on numerous occasions to strip
funding from so-called “sanctuary” cities.
We believe it is essential to stand in solidarity with any immigrant seeking security and safety within our cities. With the vast resources at our disposal we should be working on comprehensive immigration reform, NOT this “gun to the head” type of governing,
which is ineffective and harmful to anyone within a “sanctuary” city – citizen or not.
More than 300 states, counties, and cities qualify for the term “sanctuary.” Further, attempts to strip funding from these jurisdictions will most likely come from essential programs within the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security.
Both provide grants for local law enforcement to hire officers, bolster prosecutions, provide drug treatment, and prepare for terrorist attacks.
We must work toward meaningful, bipartisan legislation that provides solace to the most vulnerable in our society. Should you have any questions regarding the bill, or you would like to cosponsor, please contact Brooke Stuedell (brooke.stuedell@mail.house.gov
or 5-4061) in my office.
Sincerely,
Mike Quigley
Member of Congress
