Become an Original Cosponsor of the Ensuring the Safety of Our Mail Act
to Fight the Increase in Identity Theft through Mail Burglary
Deadline to be Original Cosponsor: January 20, 2017
Mail theft is a crime on the rise across the nation, especially among cluster boxes which are free-standing, pedestal-mounted mailboxes. It is becoming more cost-effective for the post office to install these types of boxes in new residential developments,
typically in rural areas, because it takes less time to deliver the mail in a cluster than to drive to each mail box down the lane. However, they can also be an easy target for skilled mail thieves.
One approach to combat the problem is through the penal code. Currently, the maximum jail sentence for anyone convicted of mail theft is five years under Section 1708 of Title 18 of the U.S. Code. The Ensuring the Safety Our Mail Act increases the maximum
jail sentence to ten years.
I hope that you will join me as an original cosponsor to the Ensuring the Safety of Our Mail Act. If you have any questions or would like to become an original cosponsor, please contact Amy Surber at 5-1986 or
