Continue the Fight Against Opioid and Heroin Addiction

Support including emergency funds for opioid addiction in Cures package

Current cosigners: Rep. Courtney, Rep. Kuster, Rep. Esty, Rep. Dingell

Dear Colleague,

Today, the Surgeon General released
a landmark report about addiction, calling the fight against substance use disorder “a moral test for America”. It is time we address this chronic illness by ensuring that those best able to fight it have
the resources they need. Please join us in sending a letter to the House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to uphold promises to appropriate emergency supplemental funds to combat heroin and opioid addiction in our communities this
fiscal year. The 21st Century Cures Act, which is currently being considered for floor action next month, is our last opportunity to provide $600 million in emergency supplemental funds to provide law enforcement and addiction recovery staff
on the ground with the resources they desperately need to continue fighting they need for treatment, outreach, and recovery. As you will recall, at the time we passed the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act last July, the chairs of the conference committee
promised that funding would be forthcoming for CARA’s authorizations for enforcement and treatment. Now is the time to keep that promise. I urge you to join us in sending the below letter to House and Senate leadership to express our support for including
this funding in Cures, and to reinforce the true emergent nature of this crisis.

Please contact Maria Costigan ( in Rep. Courtney’s office or Kevin Diamond (
in Rep. Kuster’s office or for more information or to sign on.

The deadline to sign on is
COB Thursday.
