Rep. Mike Kelly: Sign Letter to Protect Free Speech/WSJ: Court filings reveal the true aim of this ‘fraud’ case: silencing conservatives
Deadline: COB September 23
“The first thing to know about the crusade against Exxon by state attorneys general is that it isn’t about the law. The second thing to know is that it isn’t even about Exxon. What these liberal prosecutors really want is to shut
down a universe of their most-hated ideological opponents.” —
Kimberley A. Strassel, Exxon’s Inquisitors Feel the Heat: Court filings reveal the true aim of this ‘fraud’ case: silencing conservatives (Wall Street Journal, June 16, 2016).
Recently state attorneys general have sought to use their law enforcement powers to investigate organizations and individuals because of their speech on matters of scientific debate. Further, the federal Department of Justice has also been called upon to
engage in similar actions.
Such investigations risk jeopardizing the First Amendment right to freedom of speech as well as the foundational principle of the rule of law. It is crucial that government officials adhere to the law and to the Constitution as they carry out their duties.
Therefore, I invite you to sign a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch urging her to uphold the First Amendment rights of all and to refrain from taking action against groups and individuals because of their speech.
For more information or to sign the letter, please contact Isaac Fong in my office at
