Congressional Briefing: Children of the Syrian Refugee Crisis

Wednesday, September 14th

1:30 – 2:30 PM

2456 Rayburn

Dear colleague,

You are cordially invited to a briefing at 1:30 pm on September 14th with the members of a recent mission to Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey who looked into the situation of Syrian children.  The report from their mission, Childhood Interrupted: Lost Years for the Children of the Syrian Refugee Crisis, was released last week and copies will be available on September

Briefers include:

·      Annie Wilson of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service;
·      Kristyn Peck of Migration and Refugee Services of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops;
·      Melonee Douglas of HIAS; and
·      Christina Tobias-Nahi of Islamic Relief USA.

Their recent mission was intended to advise donors and the U.S.-based non-governmental sector of avenues for improving the protection, care and well-being
of refugee children with a particular focus on the situation of Syrians. The original impetus for the mission came from an interfaith group of humanitarians in New York City, led by Jack Bendheim and his associate Dara Freed. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service
(LIRS) organized the mission and assembled a collaborative team consisting of representatives from HIAS, the International Rescue Committee, Islamic Relief USA and Migration and Refugee Services of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Additionally, the mission
was supported by two consultants with particular areas of technical expertise, and received invaluable counsel and access from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).  The report was issued with the full support of the mission
team and funder.

I hope you will join me at
1:30 pm on September 14th in 2456 Rayburn for this important briefing.
Members, staff, and interns are all welcome.
