From: The Honorable Alcee L. Hastings
Please join me in sending the below letter to the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic Peter Kmec.
As you may know, more and more extremist right-wing parties throughout Europe are gaining in popularity, including Slovakia. Recent elections in Slovakia have resulted in right-wing parties winning seats in the Slovak Parliament.
These parties include the Slovak National Party, which has built its popularity on anti-Hungarian and anti-Roma rhetoric, as well as the People’s Party of Slovakia, the leader of which, Marian Kotleba, has made racist statements against Slovakia’s Roma population. Mr. Kotleba has also celebrated fascism not only through his verbal statements, but also by dressing up as a Nazi.
The growing presence of rhetoric in Slovakia that demeans its Roma population, immigrants and their LGBT community is cause for concern for all of us who cherish and wish to protect human rights. It is important that we come together now to help our friends in Slovakia, who are undoubtedly committed to ridding their country of such hateful speech and protecting basic human rights.
