Dear Colleague:

Join me in assisting unemployed and underemployed workers by cosponsoring H.R. 3280, the Widening Internet Readiness for Employment Development (WIRED) Act.  Our bill, at no cost to the government, would direct the Department of Labor, along with the Workforce Investment Boards, to create quality standards for local One-Stop Career Center websites and require these centers offer certain job seeking services virtually.

For many unemployed workers, the employment search can seem daunting.  Job seeking can be even more difficult for those workers that worked at one steady job for many years and were unexpectedly laid off.  These workers may not have experience navigating today’s virtual job market.

One-Stop Career Centers are available to help unemployed workers, students, veterans and underemployed workers locate important job seeking resources and training.  These centers provide in-person services such as improving resumes, drafting cover letters, and assisting with job interview preparation.  But, unfortunately, many of these local centers lack up-to-date websites and virtual services to assist job seekers with basic employment searching skills.

Unemployed or underemployed workers may not have the time or resources to physically travel to a One-Stop Career Center for assistance.   In the 21st century, these workers should be able to log in to their local One-Stop Career Center’s website and access services such as email and resume and cover letter assistance.  At a time when many Americans are still out of work, we must do all we can to help these workers get back into the labor force.

If you would like to cosponsor the WIRED Act or have additional questions, please contact Zac Commins (Zac.Commins@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Swalwell’s office, Patrick Hester (Patrick.Hester@mail.house.gov)
in Rep. Stefanik’s office, or Preston Bell (Preston.Bell@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Hudson’s office.

Sincerely,
