Support American Leadership in Fusion Science

*This is a programmatic request*

Dear Colleague:

Please join us in signing this letter to the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee in support of President Obama’s fiscal year (FY) 2017 budget request of $330 million, an increase of $3.6 million over FY 2016, for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) under the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Inertial Confinement Fusion and High Yield Campaign (ICF).  The NIF – a critical facility for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the scientific stockpile stewardship program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) – is a credit to the continued strength of the U.S. scientific community.

The ongoing work of LLNL and the groundbreaking research being done at the NIF continue to ensure that the U.S. can abide by our moratorium on nuclear testing while maintaining a secure stockpile.  Research conducted at the NIF also helps bring us towards a new energy future as we come closer to unlocking the potential of fusion energy.  To ensure the U.S. continues to lead the world in this field, it is critical to build upon the substantial investments already made and provide the NIF with funding that is stable and sufficient to carry out its mission and continue to advance ICF research.

For more information or to sign on to this letter, please contact Andrew Ginsburg (Andrew.Ginsburg@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Swalwell’s office or Angela Ebiner (Angela.Ebiner@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Lofgren’s office. Deadline to sign on is COB Wednesday, March 8.

Sincerely,

Dear Chairman Simpson and Ranking Member Kaptur:

We are writing to express our strong support of President Obama’s fiscal year (FY) 2017 budget request of $330 million for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, under the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Inertial Confinement Fusion and High Yield Campaign (ICF).

Failing to provide this stable and sufficient funding would have a negative impact on domestic fusion research at a critical juncture when major scientific breakthroughs are being achieved.  Russia, China, and France have accelerated investments in this area to compete in inertial confinement fusion, but remain behind this premier U.S. facility.  We must not cede American leadership, as this investment leads to the energy industry of the future.

To ensure the U.S. does not fall behind our competitors and continues to build upon the significant investments already made, it is essential that the NIF be given the sustained funding consistent with the President’s budget request.  We look forward to working with you to maintain and build on our country’s leadership in inertial confinement fusion research and development, necessary to maintain our nuclear stockpile and develop the energy of the future.

Thank you for your consideration of our request.

Sincerely,
