Briefing:  Take a bite out of crime: FBI’s database to track animal abuse incidents

Wednesday 2/24 @ 3:00pm in 215 HVC

Dear Colleague:

By now, you should have received an invitation to attend a briefing on a new FBI data collection effort to track animal cruelty crimes. The briefing will be an opportunity to learn more about the link between animal abuse and violence toward humans, how tracking incidents of animal cruelty will help officials to better understand these crimes, and how they are linked to other violence.

As co-chairs of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, we encourage you and your staff to attend this important event.

This year, the FBI began tracking incidents of animal cruelty in its National Incident Based Reporting System. Allowing law enforcement officials to track crimes against animals, which now join homicide, arson, and assault as Group A offenses, will ultimately allow officials to better allocate resources to understanding and responding to these types of crimes, which occur alongside many other forms of violence and criminal activity. Ramifications from this will not only improve the lives of animals who are being abused but also the people who may be next in line to suffer a similar fate.

This briefing is sponsored by American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Animal Welfare Institute, The Humane Society of the United States, and Humane Society Legislative Fund.
