The LGBT senior population is growing, and will roughly double to 6 million Americans by 2030. Unfortunately, decades of marginalization and legal and institutional barriers have left LGBT seniors with fewer sources of support, higher poverty rates, social isolation, and inadequate access to health care. It is for this reason that the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations (LCAO) identified LGBT issues as a key priority for national aging care programs and the Older Americans Act reauthorization.

We have created a system in which many students can no longer afford an education. Nationally, student loan debt now tops $1.2 trillion—that is more than our credit card debt and car debt combined. About 70 percent of our students who earn a bachelor’s degree graduate with an average of $28,400 in student loan debt.

Groundbreaking research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) alone added more than $57.8 billion in new economic activity and the creation of over 400,000 jobs across the country in 2012.
