Bill: H.R. 1653
Date: 6/2/2015

Cosponsor H.R. 1653 – the Medicare Hearing Aid Coverage Act of 2015

Dear Colleague:
Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in the United States, affecting nearly 20 million Americans over the age of 45. The problem will continue to grow as baby boomers age, and if not treated, it has serious physical, emotional, and social consequences for older adults. In fact, a study by the National Council on Aging found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety, paranoia and were less likely to participate in organized social activities compared to those who wear hearing aids. Additionally, studies have demonstrated a higher risk of dementia in people with hearing loss.
It is clear hearing aids are critical to improving quality-of-life for senior citizens who suffer from hearing loss. Yet despite the clear need for seniors, Medicare does not cover the cost of hearing aids for beneficiaries, and in fact the program is prohibited from doing so by law. This is even more distressing when you consider the average price of a pair of hearing aids ranges between $4,000 and $4,500, a price tag many seniors cannot afford.
That is why I introduced H.R. 1653, the Medicare Hearing Aid Coverage Act of 2015. This simple legislation strikes the statutory prohibition on Medicare coverage of hearing aids and directs GAO to conduct a study on insurance programs that provide services to help with hearing loss.
Hearing loss is a quality of life issue, and no one should feel isolated, confused, or shutout from the world around them because they cannot afford the treatment they need. This bill is just one piece of the puzzle to bring our fragmented and unnavigable health care system into the 21st century to better serve seniors and families.
I encourage you cosponsor this important legislation. To co-sponsor the legislation, please contact Greg Sunstrum of my staff at Greg.Sunstrum@mail.house.gov or 5-4071.
Sincerely yours,

Debbie Dingell
