Please join us in urging the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator, Marilyn Tavenner, to delay the implementation of new codes which could result in significantly decreased patient access to low-cost, quality radiation treatment, especially for breast and prostate cancer patients.
The American Medical Association’s release of 2015 codes would replace the radiation treatment delivery code with a new “simple” code to be used only for treatments of breast cancer and prostate cancer patients. The new “complex” code is to be used for treatments ofall other cancer sites. We are concerned that two of the most commonly treated cancers in free-standing radiation centers have been singled out as “simple” with no opportunity for public discussion.
Additionally, we are troubled by the decision of CMS to remove radiation treatment vaults which are crucial in providing safe Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). For 2015, CMS has proposed removing the radiation treatment vault as a direct practice expense, which will significantly reduce the associated payment. We oppose this Medicare payment cut.
Specifically, our letter urges CMS to delay implementation of these code changes until the public has sufficient time to review and comment on both the code changes themselves as well as the associated values assigned to these new codes by CMS.
For more information or to sign the letter, please contact Taryn Dorfman with Rep. Stivers email@example.com or Donnica Hawes-Saunders with Rep. Beatty firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline to sign is Monday, October 27th.
