Bill: H.R. 5473
Make English the Official Language of the United States:
Cosponsor H.R. 5473, the “James Boulet National Language Act of 2014”
Today, the United States is among the few countries in the world that does not have an official national language. My “James Boulet National Language Act of 2014” solves this problem by establishing English as the official language of the United States government.
The “James Boulet National Language Act of 2014” shares the same common-sense approach that its late namesake and my personal friend, James Boulet had. James was a strong advocate for English as our official national language, and I am pleased to honor his legacy by introducing this piece of legislation.
The bill plainly states that English will be the language of the government without unduly burdening the operation of the government in situations where the use of another language makes sense. It protects the US government from being forced to give rights, entitlements, or claims to communicate, perform or provide service, or materials, in any language other than English unless stated.
Further, “James Boulet National Language Act of 2014” specifically repeals Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which mandates minority language ballots. Finally, it amends Section 337(d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to state that all public ceremonies in which the oath of allegiance is administered to be conducted solely in English.
I believe in the importance of having English as the official unifying language of the United States, and hope you agree that this is a reasoned approach to making this happen.
I solicit your support and co-sponsorship for H.R.5473. Please contact my Legislative Director, Art Harman at 5-1555 or at email@example.com, with any additional questions.
