Ask Comcast to Honor its Commitment to Workforce Diversity
Current Co-Signers: Cardenas, Roybal-Allard
The impending merger between Comcast and Time Warner will create a massive communications conglomerate with far-reaching implications for consumers and the media industry. Together these companies employ 180,000 people, which is why it is important that they honor their commitment to pursuing workplace diversity.
In 2010, when Comcast merged with NBC Universal, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hispanic leadership organizations to become “industry leaders in the arena of workforce diversity.” With Latinos comprising over 15 percent of the employed workforce and only 8 percent of all management, it is essential that our nation’s largest cable provider honor its commitment to ensure diverse representation in the upper echelons of management.
It is critical that we verify that Comcast and Time Warner have actually complied with their commitment to be industry leaders in diversity. Since the MOU required the Hispanic Leadership groups to sign a non-disclosure agreement, the best source of quantifiable evidence of this effort is for the company to self-report. This letter simply asks Comcast to provide information regarding its progress, if any, toward fulfilling the promise to ensure that its workforce represents the community it serves.
Join me to speak out in support of workplace diversity and hold Comcast accountable to those who help it prosper. Deadline for signatures is Friday, August 1 at Noon. If you have any questions about this letter, please contact Brian Payne at Brian.Payne@mail.house.gov or 5-5330 in my office.
