Cosponsor the Back to Basics Jobs Creation Act

Dear Colleague:

I invite you to cosponsor H.R. 2109, the Back to Basics Jobs Creation Act of 2013.   This legislation responds to the frustrations I heard from my constituents time and time again.  It is a simple, common-sense proposal to create jobs now.

H.R. 2109 is an intensive, one-year program where local governments can immediately compete to provide self-employment and small business support for the long-term unemployed, those who have exhausted their benefits, and low-income individuals.

Similar to proposals included in the President’s jobs bill and the original intent of the TANF Emergency Contingency Fund, the Back to Basics Jobs Creation Act establishes an immediate $5 billion grant program to deliver job creation funds directly to the hardest hit communities.  These grants may be used to develop programs which provide seed funds for self-employment opportunities, small business development, and any related costs towards the costs of creating gainful employment and getting Americans back to work.

Notably, this legislation does not subsidize existing jobs or administrative costs.  H.R. 2109 immediately jumpstarts the economy by overcoming those first hurdles new entrepreneurs experience – seed funds, business training, financial literacy, additional certifications, small business plan development, and patent and copyright processes.  It gives them all the tools they need to create jobs now, not in 6-months, not next year – now.

I hope you will join me in supporting this simple bill.  For more information, or to cosponsor, please contact Jamila Thompson on my staff at Jamila.thompson@mail.house.gov or x5-3801.

Sincerely,

/s

John Lewis
