Dear Colleague,
The tragic murders at the Navy Yard reminds us that personnel on our military bases are dangerously vulnerable to attack.
Even with expected increases in security, the truth is if a terrorist or murderer bypasses the safeguards, military and civilian personnel on bases will again be defenseless against such an attack.
Simply, all military personnel are well trained and could stop such shootings, yet Clinton-era and other laws and regulations have disarmed the very soldiers who could react immediately.
Our nation entrusts our soldiers to defend our nation, and basic and additional skills training involves firearms handling and safety courses. Yet they are by law forbidden from carrying firearms on base–even after the Fort Hood terrorist attack.
I introduced H.R. 3199, the Safe Military Bases Act, which will repeal the military personnel gun bans, and invite you to cosponsor this important bill. Now, we have 21 co-sponsors.
