**This is a programmatic request**
DEADLINE: April 3rd
I write to urge you to join me in sending the attached letter to the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies requesting support for the President’s FY15 budget funding request of $100 million for the “First in the World” fund administered by the U.S. Department of Education.
The “First in the World” fund supports a grant competition to:
- Encourage institutions of higher education to increase postsecondary attainment rates and
- Decrease costs for students by developing innovative practices, evaluating and building successful strategies, and expanding proven models to a national level.
- Provides funds to test and develop strategies to help low-income high school students prepare for, attend, and succeed at colleges and universities.
This program is modeled after the successful and effective i3 program for elementary education. Using the i3 program model, the “First in the World” program will reach out to high school and higher education students to increase student success. Access to a quality and affordable education is the surest path to success, and a highly skilled and well-educated workforce is the key to maintaining the United States’ economic strength in this increasingly global economy.
I encourage you to support this much needed program to help bring college costs down and improve access for students.
If you have questions or would like to sign the letter, please contact Hannah Katz in my office at Hannah.Katz@mail.house.gov. Deadline for signing the letter is Thursday, April 3rd.
