Dear Colleague:

As co-chairs of the House Historic Preservation Caucus, we ask you to support funding for the core historic preservation programs which help to stimulate private investment, spur economic growth and create jobs while revitalizing our communities and protecting our country’s cultural heritage.  Specifically, we ask that you sign the attached letter to the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee requesting $56.41 million for the Historic Preservation Fund for Fiscal Year 15, including $46.925 million for State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs), $8.985 million for Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs), and $500,000 in grants to underserved communities.  These amounts are equal to the level of funds provided in Fiscal Year 2014 and recommended in the President’s Fiscal Year 2015 budget submission.

SHPOs carry out the National Historic Preservation Act which provides citizens the tools they need to revitalize, rehabilitate, and protect the places that give meaning to America.  Funding for SHPOs leverages investments through local jobs, non-federal contributions and long-term economic development.  THPOs carry-out many of the same functions as SHPOs in tribal areas.  In 2013, the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, administered by SHPOs, leveraged over $3.39 billion in private investment and created nearly 63,000 jobs.

Please contact Vince Erfe with Rep. Turner at x56465 (vince.erfe@mail.house.gov) or Alicia Siani with Rep. Holt at x55801 (alicia.siani@mail.house.gov) if you would like to sign the letter.  The deadline to sign is COB Friday, March 28, 2014.  As this is a programmatic request, signing Members are required to submit documentation online with the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Turner
