Bill: H.Res. 308

Date: 4/1/2009

I write to ask your support for H. Res. 308, a resolution that I recently introduced commemorating the life and legacy of Pedro Zamora. Pedro was a world renowned HIV/AIDS educator and activist who inspired many to confront their fears, ignorance, and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.

His historical appearance as one of the first openly gay men of color living with HIV/AIDS on MTV’s reality television series The Real World: San Francisco in 1994 brought international attention to the realities of HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues. Almost 15 years after Zamora’s tragic death at the age of 22, the importance of AIDS education, prevention, and treatment is no less relevant today than it was in the early 1990s.

This resolution honors Pedro Zamora’s contributions to HIV/AIDS and LGBT advocacy, expresses support for HIV/AIDS activists and comprehensive sex education, supports programs that are targeted at populations and areas that are highly affected by HIV/AIDS, and encourages support for entities that protect the civil rights of the LGBT community. Please join me in honoring this pioneer in the battle against HIV/AIDS and co-sponsor this important resolution. If you have any questions or would like to be a co-sponsor, please contact Amye Greene ( or Christian Sy ( of my office at 5-1313.

Original co-sponsors Include: Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Barney Frank (D-MA),

Donna Christensen (D-VI), John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Jared Polis (D-CO), Diane Watson (D-CA), Lois Capps (D-CA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Gwen Moore (D-WI), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Corrine Brown (D-FL) and Barbara Lee (D-CA).
