This week’s tragic attack by a chimpanzee, leaving a woman in very critical condition brings renewed urgency to Congress to pass H.R. 80, the Captive Primate Safety Act. Below is a New York Times article which details the attack. We are writing to ask your support for the Captive Primate Safety Act,which will protect public health and safety as well as animal welfare by prohibiting interstate commerce in primates as pets.
In October 2007, a double decker cattle truck carrying 59 Belgian draft horses overturned when the driver ran a red light and hit another vehicle on Route 41 in Illinois. Residents at the scene could hear the animals kicking and screaming, panicked by their inability to escape. Eight horses died on the scene while another ten had to be euthanized. Unfortunately, we know that accidents like this one occur once a year.
